Test Utility
This test is a quantitative measurement to determine the levels of N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in human serum and plasma.

Methodology
This test is a one-step sandwich assay that measures the N-terminal prohormone fragment (NT-proBNP) of the B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP). This fragment is a result of cleavage of BNP, which may be produced in higher concentrations and may be a sign of heart failure. The NT-proBNP test has a longer half-life, is more stable, and is not affected by certain medications making it preferrable over the BNP test.
Note: Since the NT-proBNP fragment has a longer half-life, the normal range of this test is approximately 6x higher than the BNP test, therefore, test results are not interchangeable with the BNP test.

Store serum at the following temperatures:
Room temperature: 15 to 25°C, 24 hours
Refrigerated: 2 to 10°C, 3 days
Frozen: -15°C or below 30 days
