Test Utility
This test is a quantitative measurement to determine the level of ethyl alcohol in human serum or plasma. Ethyl alcohol is commonly found in patient samples and its measurement can be used in the diagnosis and treatment of alcohol intoxication and alcohol poisoning.

Methodology
This test measures ethyl alcohol concentration using an enzymatic rate method where ethyl alcohol is oxidized to acetaldehyde during which NAD is reduced to NADH. The increase in absorbance from the NAD to NADH reduction is proportional to the concentration of alcohol in the patient's specimen.

Specimen Collection and Preparation
Serum or plasma sample in the following tubes:
Serum separator tube (gold or tiger top)
Plasma in or EDTA (purple top), Citrate (blue top), Heparin (Green top) and fluoride/oxalate (gray top) tubes
Note: do not use alcohol or other volatile disinfectants when collecting patient samples.
Specimen Storage and Stability
Store serum at the following temperatures:
Room temperature: Not applicable
Refrigerated: 2 – 8°C up to 3 days
Frozen: -20°C or below up to 30 days
