The HBc IgM assay is an IgM capture immunoassay that uses a 2-step format to identify antibody-antigen complexes that are formed if HBV is present.

Specimen Collection and Preparation
Serum or plasma sample in the following tubes:
Serum separator tube (gold or tiger top)
EDTA (lavender top) and Lithium/Sodium Heparin (green top)
Specimen Storage and Stability
Store serum or plasma at the following temperatures:
Room temperature: Up to 8 hours
Refrigerated: 2°C to 8°C for up to 2 days
Frozen: -20°C or lower: Samples should not be thawed more than 4 times.
Thoroughly mix and centrifuge thawed samples for 2 minutes before using.

HBV is a reportable infection. Reactive results will be reported to the Oakland County Health Department by VHL.
