Test Utility
The homocysteine test measures the amount of homocysteine, an amino acid, that is in the body. Homocysteine is normally broken down by the vitamins B6, B9, B12, or folic acid and used in other processes in the body. An increase in homocysteine levels may indicate a deficiency in one or more of these molecules. High homocysteine levels are associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease.

Specimen Collection and Preparation
Serum or plasma sample in the following tubes:
Recommended Specimen: EDTA (lavender top) OR Lithium Heparin (green top)
Also acceptable: Serum separator tube (gold or tiger top)
Specimen Storage and Stability
Samples should be centrifuged, and serum or plasma removed from the RBCs as soon as possible. Samples that are unable to be separated should be stored on ice until they can be centrifuged.
Store serum or plasma at the following temperatures:
Refrigerated: 2°C to 8°C for up to 48 hours.
Frozen: -20°C or lower for up to 13 weeks.
