This test is used for the determination of increased urease production associated with an active Helicobacter pylori infection in the stomach.

The breath test is a non-invasive test used to analyze breath samples before and after ingestion of 13C-enriched urea.

Specimen Collection and Preparation
2 breath bags
Baseline bag (blue)
Post ingestion bag (grey)
Baseline bag (blue bag)
Patients should inhale and hold their breath for 4-5 seconds and then exhale into the bag
Push cap on bag until it clicks
Post Ingestion bag (grey bag)
Prepare a test drink using the 13C-urea tablet and Citrica powder, fill cup with water to max line
Mix until completely dissolved
Have the patient drink the entire solution within 2 minutes
Wait 15 minutes
Patients should inhale and hold their breath for 4-5 seconds and then exhale into the grey bag
Push cap on until it clicks
Label the two bags with at least 2 patient identifiers
Specimen Storage and Stability
Bags can be stored at room temperature for up to 14 days.
Specimen Rejection
Insufficient sample volume (bag is not filled)
Sample not stored at proper temperature
Specimen labeled incorrectly or not labeled
