Specimen Collection and Preparation
Urine sample in a clean and dry container:
A first morning urine is preferred since if generally contains the highest level of hCG
Urine collected at other times in the day is also acceptable
Specimen Storage and Stability
Store urine samples at the following temperatures:
Room Temperature: Not indicated
Refrigerated: 2°C to 8°C up to 48 hours.
Frozen: -20°C or lower up to 30 days

The production of hCG is extremely rapid following conception and varies among individuals.
A negative value does not rule out pregnancy. Patients with a negative result should be redrawn in 2 days and retested. This is due to the fact that HCG values in normal pregnancy double every 48 hours.
