Creatine Kinase (CK)

Test Utility
The enzyme Creatine kinase (CK) is found in skeletal muscle, heart muscle, and brain. Damage to these tissues results in an increase of creatine kinase in the bloodstream. Elevated CK levels may indicate muscle injury or disease.
Note: This tests for total creatine kinase. See Creatine Kinase, Isoenzyme MB if the CK-MB isoform is requested.
Urine Drug Screen Profile Includes:
Methodology
CK reversibly catalyzes the transfer of a phosphate group to produce ATP, which is used to produce glucose-6-phosphate from glucose followed by oxidization to G6-DH, which is further reduced to NADP. Ultimately NADPH is formed and is proportional to the CK activity in the patient sample. NADPH is detected by an increase in absorbance.
