Test Utility

This is a qualitative real-time assay for the identification of ribosomal RNA markers from the bacteria Candida spp, Candida glabrata and Trichomonas vaginalis.  This test is approved to aid in the diagnosis of vulvovaginal candidiasis and trichomoniasis from individuals who exhibit clinical symptoms suggestive of vaginitis and/or vulvovaginitis.


Note: The assay reports a qualitative result for CV/TV. It does not report results for individual Candida spp. organisms except Candida glabrata. Trichomonas vaginalis is also individually resulted.

Nucleic acid amplification using Target Capture and Real-Time Transcription Mediated Amplification (TMA) Detection is through hybridization to a complementary chemiluminesent probe.

Specimen Collection and Preparation

Swab (female): Aptima Multitest Swab Collection kit

  • Vaginal

Note: Only swabs provided in the kit are validated for use. The swab must remain in the media for transport to the lab.

Specimen Storage and Stability

Store swabs at the following temperature:

  • Room Temperature or Refrigerated: 2 - 30°C up to 30 days

  • Refrigerated: -20°C to -70°C up to 60 days

Specimen Rejection

  • Received outside of stability

  • Received expired collection tube

  • Specimen not stored properly

  • < 1 mL volume of media in the swab tube

  • No swab in the media

  • More than one swab or a different swab in the media

  • Insufficient volume in the urine transport tube

  • Broken or leaking container

  • Specimen labeled incorrectly or not labeled
