Methodology

This test consists of a macroscopic evaluation of specimen color, clarity, specific gravity and chemical dipstick testing and a microscopic component using brightfield microscopy.

Test Utility

The test can be used in conjunction with other tests to indicate a variety of medical issues including diseases of the urinary tract and metabolic or systemic diseases.

Specimen Collection and Preparation

Urine collected in a clean container:

  • Optimum volume: 10 – 15 mL

  • Minimum volume: 2 mL

Specimen Storage and Stability

Store urine at the following temperatures:

  • Room temperature: within 2 hours for optimum results

  • Refrigerated 2°C to 8°C:  24 hours

  • Frozen: Not acceptable

Specimen Rejection

  • Insufficient sample volume

  • Sample stored > 2 hours at room temperature

  • Fecal contamination

  • Samples containing contrast media

  • Samples containing various elements such as lubricating jelly, talcum powder, etc.

  • Specimen labeled incorrectly or not labeled

  • Specimens submitted in inappropriate non-sterile containers or containers containing boric acid preservative.
