Methodology

Test Utility

This panel is used to monitor patients that are on TPN to prevent the complications of refeeding syndrome.

Specimen Collection and Preparation

Serum sample in the following tubes:

  • Serum separator tube (gold or tiger top), minimum 6mL

Specimen Storage and Stability

Sample should be fully clotted and centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 15 minutes within 1 hour of collection, and serum separated as soon as possible.


Store serum at the following temperatures:

  • Room temperature: 15°C to 25°C no longer than 8 hours

  • Refrigerated: 2°C to 8°C up to 48 hours

  • Frozen: -20°C or lower up to 2 months

Specimen Rejection

  • Insufficient sample volume

  • Sample not stored at proper temperature

  • Frozen whole blood

  • Hemolyzed samples

  • Severely lipemic specimens

  • Specimen labeled incorrectly or not labeled

NOTE: Specimens are refrigerated (2-8°) for 7 days before disposal
