Prealbumin
Methodology
This test uses a turbidimeter to measure increased absorbance due to the result of particle complexes formed during the antigen-antibody reaction.
Test Utility
Prealbumin levels may be decreased in cases of inflammation, malignancy, cirrhosis and diseases affecting the liver and kidneys. Prealbumin levels may increase in diseases such as Hodgkins lymphoma.
Specimen Collection and Preparation
Fasting serum in the following tubes:
Serum separator tube (gold or tiger top)
Specimen Storage and Stability
Store serum or plasma at the following temperatures:
Room Temperature: Not indicated
Refrigerated: 2°C to 8°C for up to 7 days
Frozen: -20°C or lower up to 2 months
Specimen Rejection
Insufficient sample volume
Sample not stored at proper temperature
Frozen whole blood
Severely hemolyzed samples
Severely lipemic specimens
Specimen labeled incorrectly or not labeled
