Platelet Count
Methodology
The platelet count is performed on the Sysmex XN Series Hematology Analyzer. This analyzer uses several technologies including flow cytometry, which determines the number of platelets in the patient's blood.
Test Utility
The platelet count can be used in conjunction with other laboratory tests to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of bleeding disorders and other hematological disorders.
Specimen Collection and Preparation
Whole blood sample in the following tubes:
Preferred Specimen: Lavender Top K2 EDTA tube. (Minimum Whole Blood: 1.5 mL)
Also acceptable: Light blue top sodium citrate tube (Minimum Whole Blood: 1.5 mL)
Specimen Storage and Stability
Store whole blood at the following temperatures:
Room temperature: 24 hours (<8 hours ideal)
Refrigerated 2°C to 8°C: 48 hours
Frozen: Do not freeze
Specimen Rejection
Insufficient sample volume
Sample not stored at proper temperature
Frozen whole blood
Hemolyzed samples
Severely lipemic specimens
Specimen labeled incorrectly or not labeled

Result available within 24 hours of receipt in laboratory
NOTE: Specimens are refrigerated (2-8°) for 7 days before disposal
