Methodology

The test is a homogeneous enzyme immunoassay based on competition between the drug in the patient’s sample and a labeled drug in the assay.

Test Utility

This test measures phenytonin levels in human serum or plasma. It is used to monitor and adjust drug levels in individual patients.

Specimen Collection and Preparation

Serum or plasma sample in the following tubes:

  • Serum and separator tube (red, gold or tiger top)

  • Lithium/Sodium Heparin (green top)

  • EDTA (lavender top)

Specimen Storage and Stability

Separate serum or plasma within 2 hours of collection and store at the following temperatures:

  • Room Temperature: Not indicated

  • Refrigerated: 2°C to 8°C up to 1 month

  • Frozen: -20°C or lower up to 3 months

Specimen Rejection

  • Insufficient sample volume

  • Sample not stored at proper temperature

  • Frozen whole blood

  • Severely hemolyzed samples

  • Severely lipemic specimens

  • Specimen labeled incorrectly or not labeled
