Helicobacter pylori Breath Test

Methodology

The breath test is a non-invasive test used to analyze breath samples before and after ingestion of 13C-enriched urea.

Test Utility

This test is used for the determination of increased urease production associated with active Helicobacter pylori infection the stomach.

Specimen Collection and Preparation

2 breath bags

  • Baseline bag (blue)

  • Post ingestion bag (grey)

Baseline bag (blue bag)

  • Patients should inhale and hold their breath for 4-5 seconds and then exhale into the bag

  • Push cap on bag until it clicks

Post Ingestion bag (grey bag)

  • Prepare a test drink using the 13C-urea tablet and Citrica powder, fill cup with water to max line

  • Mix until completely dissolved

  • Have the patient drink the entire solution within 2 minutes

  • Wait 15 minutes

  • Patients should inhale and hold their breath for 4-5 seconds and then exhale into the grey bag

  • Push cap on until it clicks

Label the two bags with at least 2 patient identifiers

Specimen Storage and Stability

Bags can be stored at room temperature for up to 14 days.

Specimen Rejection

  • Insufficient sample volume (bag is not filled)

  • Sample not stored at proper temperature

  • Specimen labeled incorrectly or not labeled
