Methodology
Utilizes a paramagnetic particle, chemiluminescent immunoassay
Test Utility
The CA 19-9 antigen is elevated in various cancers, especially pancreatic cancer. It may also be elevated in cancers of the biliary ductular cells, and gastric, colonic, salivary and endometrial cancers.
Specimen Collection and Preparation
Serum or heparinized plasma sample in the following tubes:
Preferred Specimen: One Gold-top SST tube, minimum volume 4.0 mL
Also acceptable: One Lithium Heparin tube, minimum volume 3.0 mL
Specimen Storage and Stability
Store serum or plasma at the following temperatures:
Room temperature: 9 hours
Refrigerated: 2°C to 8°C: 48 hours
Frozen: Not indicated
Specimen Rejection
Insufficient sample volume
Sample not stored at proper temperature
Frozen whole blood
Specimen labeled incorrectly or not labeled
