Methodology

The test is a homogeneous enzyme immunoassay based on competition between the drug in the patient’s sample and a labeled drug in the assay.

Test Utility

This test measures gentamicin levels in human serum or plasma. It is used to monitor and adjust drug levels in individual patients.


Note: Designate Peak or Trough level on the test requisition

Specimen Collection and Preparation

Serum or plasma sample in the following tubes:

  • Serum and separator tube (red, gold or tiger top)

  • Lithium/Sodium Heparin (green top)

  • EDTA (lavender top)

Specimen Storage and Stability

Separate serum or plasma within 2 hours of collection and store at the following temperatures:

  • Room Temperature: Not indicated

  • Refrigerated: 2°C to 8°C up to 6 weeks

  • Frozen: -20°C or lower up to 6 months

Specimen Rejection

  • Insufficient sample volume

  • Sample not stored at proper temperature

  • Frozen whole blood

  • Severely hemolyzed samples

  • Severely lipemic specimens

  • Specimen labeled incorrectly or not labeled
