Methodology

The CMV IgG assay is a 2-step sandwich immunoassay that uses indirect chemiluminometric technology.

Test Utility

This test is used to determine if a person has been infected with the cytomegalovirus. This test tells immune status and not when the patient was infected or if the infection is current.

Specimen Collection and Preparation

Serum or plasma samples in the following tubes:

  • Serum separator tube (gold or tiger top)

  • EDTA (lavender top) OR Heparin (green top)

Specimen Storage and Stability

Separate serum and plasma within 24 hours and store samples at the following temperatures:

  • Room temperature: 15°C to 30°C up to 48 hours

  • Refrigerated: 2°C to 8°C  up to 7 days

  • Frozen: -20°C or lower up to 12 months. Samples should be thawed no more than 3 times.

Specimen Rejection

  • Insufficient sample volume

  • Sample not stored at proper temperature

  • Frozen whole blood

  • Severely hemolyzed samples

  • Severely lipemic specimens

  • Specimen labeled incorrectly or not labeled
