The methodology uses a two-site immunoenzymatic “sandwich” assay.

Test Utility

Used as marker for detecting breast cancer as well by measuring the level of CA 15-3-specific antigen in blood. It may also be used to detect lung, ovarian, pancreatic and colorectal cancers.

Specimen Collection and Preparation

Serum or heparinized plasma sample in the following tubes:

  • Preferred Specimen: One Gold-top SST tube, minimum volume 4.0 mL

  • Also acceptable: One Lithium Heparin tube, minimum volume 3.0 mL

Specimen Storage and Stability

Store serum or plasma at the following temperatures:

  • Room temperature: 8 hours

  • Refrigerated: 2°C to 8°C: 48 hours

  • Frozen: Not indicated

Specimen Rejection

  • Insufficient sample volume

  • Sample not stored at proper temperature

  • Frozen whole blood

  • Specimen labeled incorrectly or not labeled
