Methodology

Testing performed on Beckman Coulter DxC 700 AU with serum testing.

Test Utility

Used to diagnose an overdose and in monitoring its levels in patients to ensure appropriate therapy.

Specimen Storage and Stability

Store the serum refrigerated at 2-8C. Sample may be frozen (-20C) for 1 year.

Specimen Collection and Preparation

Serum valproic acid concentration that test best represents the peak tissue level, draw the sample 1 to 3 hours after an oral dose has been given. Serum sample required, sample volume needs to be at least 2.0mL Gold Top or Tiger SST. Sample should be free from hemolysis, whole blood cannot be used.

  • Improperly labeled

  • Specimen grossly

  • Hemolyzed uncentrifuged

Reference Ranges

Therapeutic Range = 50 - 100ug/mL

Performed

Monday - Saturday, 16 hours a day.

Result available after getting the specimen in 5 hours.

STAT results available within 2 hours of receipt in the Laboratory.

*NOTE: All Specimen Refrigerated (2-8°C) for 7 days only.
