PSA Free
Test Code
PSA
Methodology
Testing performed on Beckman Coulter Access2 Immunoassay Systems with serum testing.
Test Utility
Used to detect Prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, which is used in the detection of prostate cancer in men aged 50 years and older.
Specimen Storage and Stability
Serum sample is to be assayed within 24 hours after collection, the specimen should be stored refrigerated at 2-8C. Specimen held for longer times (up to 5 months) should be frozen at -20C or colder. Specimens held for longer than 5 months should be frozen at -70C. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles have no effect on free PSA, total PSA, or percent free PSA.
Specimen Collection and Preparation
Serum is the recommended sample. Plasma samples should not be used. Only blood drawn by an acceptable medical technique into a collection tube with no anticoagulants should be used. Specimen should be collected in such a way as to avoid hemolysis.
If the specimens will be potentially used for free PSA testing, it should be processed (centrifuged) and refrigerated within 3 hours of blood draw.
Turbid serum samples or samples containing particulate matter should be centrifuged prior to assay. Sample volumes need to be 4.0mL Gold Top or Tiger SST.
