Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity
Test Code
UIBC
Methodology
Testing performed on Beckman Coulter DxC 700 AU with serum testing.
Test Utility
Used for the evaluation of iron deficiency, hemochromatosis, and to verify acute iron poisoning.
Specimen Storage and Stability
Serum iron is stable for 7 days at 2-8C or 4 days at room temperature (15-25C) after the serum is separated from red cells.
Specimen Collection and Preparation
Serum sample free from hemolysis is the recommended specimen. Remove serum from the red cells to minimize hemolysis. Samples should be taken in the morning from patients in a fasting state, since iron values can decrease by 30% during the course of the day. 3.0ML Gold or Tiger SST.
